Bowling Activities During the Pandemic

UPDATE June 27: People walking by the Berkeley Lawn Bowling Green may notice some members bowling and playing matches. In coordination with Berkeley’s Parks and Recreation Department and the city’s Department of Public Health, the Berkeley Lawn Bowling Club’s board of directors provisionally decided to allow club members to return to bowling in several stages that follow specific and mandatory guidelines. The board and city agencies created these rules with the goals of keeping our members and community safe and to prevent the possible spread of the COVID-19 virus.

For members to be allowed to bowl at the green, they must follow the city’s guidelines on social distancing and face masks as well the board’s protocols and rules for playing bowls during the COVID-19 pandemic. Any member bowling must acknowledge receipt of the guidelines and rules and agree to follow them.  Additionally, any play on the Berkeley Green is by appointment only, and any bowler must receive an email confirmation from our volunteer games manager before coming to the green for play.

Once there, the BLBC members will limit their social interactions and use enhanced hygiene practices with any commonly used lawn bowling equipment. Volunteers at the end of the day will clean all club gear used for play before returning it to storage. The BLBC works due to the volunteer work of its members, and it is important to appreciate the contributions of the bowlers working to make bowling possible during this crisis.

Unfortunately, these guidelines, rules, and restrictions prevent the Berkeley Lawn Bowling Club from offering its free lessons and instruction at this time. We look forward to being able to fulfill this part of our mission — to introduce more of our community to the game of bowls — again soon. We miss seeing our local friends and neighbors and also miss meeting our new potential bowlers. Until we can all be on the green again, be safe and well.

Check it out!

We provide the equipment; all you need is flat bottom shoes. Just drop by.

Classes also available by appointment – Call Jim at 510 644 2249.

Outdoor bowling on a bowling green is a classic sport that goes back hundreds of years and continues today in Berkeley. The retro sport we love is modern day fun out in the fresh air. Walt Disney was an avid lawn bowler.

Please, stop by and check out the action be it lessons or just to watch on Wednesday or Friday afternoon. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Already know how to bowl? Day use fees for lawn bowling are just $5 per day for Berkeley residents and $5.50 for non residents. Phone (510) 841-2174.

Draw games for members and guests are normally held on Wednesday and Friday. Please arrive or call by 12:15. Games begin at 12:30. Spontaneous draw games, practice sessions, and special sessions have become quite common.

If you are interested in having your own special event at our facility, please contact us or drop by during one of the draw games. Our facilities can accommodate around 50 people for receptions, meetings, or team building events. We can provide bowling instruction or simply a rental venue with cooking facilities.
